Mary, Martha, and Me

Yesterday, a roofing salesman came to the door. Since four storms tore through our area earlier in the season, numerous roofing companies have come but found little damage. We told this gentleman that, but he argued that many people in our area were getting their roofs repaired. He just wanted to check. So, we let him. After having an exchange like that, I decided I did not want to listen to his sales pitch later.

After the inspection, as he talked with my husband, I stood at the kitchen door, keeping a distance. Then I started busying myself in the kitchen. Sitting down with him meant I was welcoming him in, and I definitely did not want to give that impression.

On reflection, I wonder if this is really the reason Matha kept busy in the kitchen while Mary sat down with Jesus to listen to him. Yes, she loved Jesus, but to sit down with him was another step of intimacy that she was not prepared to take.

When Martha complained that Mary should be helping her, Jesus said, “Martha, Martha. You are troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion…” (Luke 10:41,42 ESV)

Could it be that Martha was troubled or anxious about more than just the serving? Could she be anxious about her relationship with Jesus, about getting close to Him? Only an introvert could understand this. Martha could have been busy because she was anxious about getting close to Jesus.

When her perfectionistic insecurities kicked in, she demanded Mary’s help to make things perfect for Jesus. Jesus told her to quit worrying and sit down and enjoy the company.

Sit down, take the next step towards intimacy with Jesus. In today’s world, put that phone down and really connect with those around you and with Jesus.

Marilynn

Was raised in the Mennonite community. She can trace her roots way back to the 1700’s in Prussia. Marilynn, as a history buff, has always been curious about the trip her ancestors took from Prussia to Southern Russia (Ukraine) and what they could have encountered between the two points. Marilynn has done an incredible amount of research to discover the political and social climate of the day and is attempting to put it in fiction story form for other readers to enjoy.

Marilynn invites you to join her on this journey of discovery.
