The Hostess with the Mostest – Four Special Ladies – Part 3

Lady #3 is Priscilla (Acts 18:1-3, 18-23, 24-26). Priscilla is never mentioned in Scripture without her husband Aquila, and her name is usually mentioned first which was unusual for that time.

She and her husband were tentmakers. Paul also practiced the trade of tentmaking to help support himself in his travels. Since they had that in common, they opened their home to Paul while he was in Corinth. They developed such a relationship with Paul that when Paul prepared to leave, Priscilla and Acquila accompanied him to Ephesus. Soon after they arrived in Ephesus, though, Paul left for Jerusalem while Priscilla and Aquila stayed on in Ephesus where they hosted a church in their home again.

After Paul left, another young man came preaching about Jesus, but he only knew about the baptism of John. Priscilla and Aquila took him into their home and explained the way of God more adequately. Dr. Tom Constable quoted Archibald Robertson saying, “It is a needed and delicate task, this thing of teaching gifted young ministers. They do not learn it all in schools. More of it comes from contact with men and women rich in grace and in the knowledge of God’s ways.” https://www.planobiblechapel.org/tcon/notes/html/nt/acts/acts.htm#head145

Priscilla and Aquila had that grace and knowledge of God’s ways when working with the young man that needed extra guidance. They were sensitive to the needs of the man not wanting to embarrass him publicly or put him on the spot, but they knew they had to correct the limited view he had of baptism. They took him into their home to talk with him.

Priscilla and Aquila were an extraordinary couple who lived and worked together as one. The local church in Ephesus met in their home and sent greetings back to Corinth when they had opportunity. (1 Cor 16:19). They were brave and even risked their lives for Paul sometime down the line as we see in Romans 16:4, and they apparently moved again from Ephesus to Rome as Paul sends greetings to them at the end of his letter to the Romans. They had again opened their house to the people in Rome. They were hospitable, they knew the message well, and they corrected where correction was due…gently and sensitively.

Priscilla and Acquila came along side Paul and encouraged him by offering companionship and support. They built a lasting relationship with him. Is there someone you can come along side with a common interest to encourage and support and build a relationship?

Hello,

I’m Marilynn

God knew me before the world was even created. He planned for me and created me in my mother’s womb. He caused many experiences, past and present, to weave into my life. I can trace my roots as far back as the Mennonites in the Reformation. This rich history makes me the person I am today. And God is still working on me. He will not give up teaching me new things until I see Him in glory.

I invite you to join me on this journey of development.
